50 years of researching, teaching and practicing cardiovascular medicine
at the Harvard School of Public Health and at the Brigham and Women's
Hospital, I am persuaded that the growing problem of heart and vascular
disease must be addressed primarily through prevention at the community
level. In fact the richest country in the world, the United States of
America, faces a mounting health care crisis largely because it focused
on high technology based curative strategies that place no premium on
prevention. The average American spends $4,000 annually for health services,
yet a fourth of the population lacks adequate or any health insurance.
